Sampling is the process of examining only a part of the population to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are fairly stated. Any time an auditor reviews less than 100% of the population, he or she is engaged in sampling. The concept of sampling is common in most audit engagements. Here are a few questions to ponder:
· Why do auditors use sampling rather than auditing every single item in the population?
